Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Book Award
Often, when students reach junior high age, they become so caught up in their social lives and extra-curricular activities that they begin to lose interest in reading for pleasure.
The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Book Award was created to encourage Illinois students in Grades 4-8 to read for personal satisfaction. It is meant to promote outstanding junior and young adult literature for adolescents.
Here’s how it works:
· - The School is registered with the Rebecca Caudill Committee.
· - Books are nominated by the same students who are elegible to vote.
· - A final list of 20 books is compiled from the nominated books. Books should have a publication date within the last five years.
· - School and public libraries make copies of the nominated books available for students.
· - Between September and February, students must read or hear at least three of the nominated books to be
eligible to vote. Audiobooks and teacher or parent read-alouds are permissible.
· - Student voting takes place in February. The results are tabulated and submitted to the Rebecca Caudill
Committee via their website.
· - The statewide winner is announced in March.

Battle of the Books (BOB)
Battle of the Books is a series of game show type competitions hosted by Wood Dale Public Library. It’s a fun challenge and a great reading opportunity for motivated students. Not only does it introduce students to a wide variety of junior and YA literature, but the program encourages responsibility, tenacity, and teamwork.
Here’s how BOB works:
- Beginning in September, a list of 30 BOB titles is released by Wood Dale Public Library.
- Students form BOB teams - 6 or 7 students is perfect. Teams can be a combination of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
A list of finalized teams is submitted to WDPL. PARENT SIGNATURES ARE REQUIRED as this is technically a WDPL event. However, competitions will take place after school, right here at WDJH. Be sure your $25.00 activity fee is paid so you are able to take the late bus home after competitions.
- Teams must read all 30 books (divide and conquer!). BOB books are on display for check-out in the WDJH LMC
as well as the WDPL.
- Teams can create "study aids" such as index cards, listing title, author, and characters for each book. These are
used for practice only, not during competition. Teams should meet periodically to discuss their reading and plan
strategy.
- WDPL hosts several pre-competition activities for all BOB participants.
- Competitions begin in February. Points are accumulated throughout the preliminary rounds. Top two teams go on
to the finals for a shot at fame and glory. Competition schedule to be determined, based on the number of
registered teams.
Watch for the 2016-17 BOB display beginning in October, 2016.
Check the Wood Dale Library website beginning in October, 2016 for the complete BOB reading list, info about pre-competition activities, and the competition schedule - http://www.wooddalelibrary.org/
